Just saw a video of Trump at the CDC in his “man of action wear”. For someone sooo concerned about image, branding, and just “looking good”, someone on Trump’s team has to tell him he looks like an absolute doofus with the “Keep America Great” emblazoned red hat pulled down over his hair-do. It is too big – probably on purpose to handle the oversized hair sprayed bonnet of a cleaned up road kill that sits atop his cerebrally vacant cranium. How do any of our allied leaders, or any leader for that matter, take him seriously with that ridiculous hat on his head?? The answer has to be: they don’t. Along with that, does the man own any other clothing other than a blue suit, a pair of chinos, brown work boots (that have never seen nor will ever see a day of real work), a black wind breaker, a couple of golf shirts, and endless white shirts sans an undershirt?
He obviously read somewhere back in the 80’s that the “power suit” was dark blue accented with a (usually) red tie and white shirt. He put that on one day, saw himself in it, fell in love with himself – again – and never looked back. All in an effort to exude “power”. His only tip of the oversized red hat to fashion diversity is a striped tie every now and then, or one that is another color. But this is not so much an acknowledgement to how he may have been feeling when dressing that day as it is a way for him to market his rather boring selection his tie company has (all manufactured in China, by the way) – more free advertising on the public dime. Continuing to push the emoluments envelope. That’s our boy in blue, red, and white. But beyond the blatant opportunity to tacitly market one of his products, these dress habits are those of an odd and eccentric person. If he didn’t have to go and visit ravaged areas due to hurricanes, floods, or tornados, he would never be seen in anything but a blue suit and a (usually) red tie.
It’s not hard to imagine the first time as President he was to visit a ravaged area due to a natural disaster – Trump came down to get on the helicopter in a – you guessed it – blue suit and (usually) red tie. No doubt, one of the WH aides had to very gingerly suggest he maybe change in to some thing a little less “powerful”, less “strong”. Maybe something a little less imposing, a little more relaxed and human. Something more in tune, identifiable with those he will be visiting. So, off he goes back up to the residential area of the WH and comes back with a pair of chinos and work boots. Gotta keep the white dress shirt though. It accentuates his tanning booth glow which is touched up with a painted on skin tint.
This is reminiscent of the aged movie diva who ungraciously descends in to old age with her face caked in make-up everyday and wearing the wardrobe of a character portrayed at her perceived pinnacle of an otherwise marginal acting career. It’s truly sad and pathetic. But this is Trump. This is our President. And there’s something very abnormal here with our President Trump.
Does Trump have a charcoal colored flannel suit? Does he have a gray suit? Saint Reagan wore brown suits – supposedly the least “powerful” of the power suit colors. And yet, Saint Reagan was/is considered a truly great and strong Republican President. Reagan had a penchant for the earth toned plaid suit too. Bush 1 liked the gray suit, and gray plaid. Clinton liked the pinned striped. Bush 2 broke it up with blue, gray, plaid suits, and jeans on the ranch back in Plano. All of them were seen in weekend clothes. Who can forget Reagan at his ranch clearing brush in his jeans and open necked shirt. Or Bush 1 on his boat off the coast of Maine in shorts and a T-shirt. Clinton in his spandex running shorts (thankfully, that didn’t last too long). Or Obama, getting on Air Force 1 in a sports jacket and open necked shirt. And who can forget the absolute shock and dismay of Obama’s complete social, political and fashion faux pas donning a summertime tanned suit… IN – THE – SUMMER – TIME. That sent republicans screaming for the door. Not Trump. Dark blue suit and a (usually) red tie…, unless his tie company’s sales are off the prior week.
All teasing and cheap (some may say mean, or even, cruel) shots aside, Trump’s obsession with displaying himself as an in control leader trying to exude power with blue suits and (usually) red ties augmenting his bluster is emblematic of a much larger, deeper issue with this man. He is obsessed, consumed with portraying himself as THE Alfa among alfa males. What is so concerning about this is it is so arrantly, blatantly obvious to even the least interested among us that he is not. He is not fooling anyone with his pathetically poor projection of hyper-strength and power. The oversized red hat pulled down over his oversized hair sprayed coif (which, like his blue suits and usually red tie is portraying an unreality) is point and case number 1. Trump may get away with this little strong man act in the first few minutes with those who aren’t familiar with him. But after three and a half years, coming up on five years for Americans if you include the time starting from his announcement for the Presidency, Americans know this man in the blue suit and very long (usually) red tie. We have heard all of the bluster and the thousands upon thousands of lies and mistruths – his most recent – “it’s the flu…” We know what this man In the blue suit is all about. And he is not what he appears. It’s a hoax, folks. It’s all a big hoax!
